Chicago Cubs Pitching Prospects #11-15: Preseason 2016

I began going through my Top 20 Pitching Prospects #16-20 with guys with a little more experience but still with room to grow. Today’s list features a handful of pitchers that are currently on the outside of the Top 10 looking in. But have no fear, each of these guys are still all under the age of 22 and have plenty of time to increase their ranking while also sliding up the list. Here are rankings 11-15 on the Out of the Vines Pitching Prospects List.

  1. Bryan Hudson

Age: 18

Throws: Left

Height: 6’8”

Weight: 220

Highest Level: Rookie AZL Cubs

6.2 IP, 2.70 ERA, 1.200 WHIP, 6.8 K/9, 2.7 BB/9

The 2015 third round pick is an imposing presence but does not have overpowering stuff. At only 18 years old, Hudson shouts potential and the Cubs have the opportunity to mold him for years to come.

  1. Jen-Ho Tseng

Age: 21

Throws: Right

Height: 6’1”

Weight: 195

Highest Level: A+ Myrtle Beach

119 IP, 3.55 ERA, 1.218 WHIP, 6.6 K/9, 2.3 BB/9

The Cubs 2014 Minor League Pitcher of the Year. He is physically at his peak. What you see is what you get with Tseng (low 90s fastball and average secondary pitches). The difference maker in getting him to Chicago is if he can improve on his pitchability.

  1. Jonathan Martinez

Age: 21

Throws: Right

Height: 6’1”

Weight: 200

Highest Level: A+ Myrtle Beach

116 IP, 2.56 ERA, 0.940 WHIP, 5.1 K/9, 2.1 BB/9

Martinez was the PTBNL in the Darwin Barney trade to the Dodgers. Although nothing about his game is mind blowing, he continues to put up incredible stats. The Venezuelan induces a lot of ground ball outs and weak contact.

  1. Carson Sands

Age: 20

Throws: Left

Height: 6’3”

Weight: 205

Highest Level: A- Eugene

57.1 IP, 3.92 ERA, 1.448 WHIP, 6.4 K/9, 3.3 BB/9

Sands is just a slightly more advanced Bryan Hudson. A couple years older and a couple levels higher, if he can cut down on his walks, he has slightly above average stuff (fastball, curve, change) and the pitchability to advance him well through the system.

  1. Oscar De La Cruz

Age: 20

Throws: Right

Height: 6’4”

Weight: 200

Highest Level: A- Eugene

73 IP, 2.84 ERA, 1.000 WHIP, 9.0 K/9, 2.1 BB/9

After a breakout 2015, De La Cruz has appeared on everyone’s prospect lists due to his strikeout to walk ratio and his ability to pitch around solid contact. Still way down in Low-A ball, I would like to see him continue to produce before I move him up any higher.
